Dynamics of Cattle Production in Brazil

Abstract: Movement of livestock production within a country or region has implications for genetics, adaptation, well-being, nutrition, and production logistics, particularly in continental-sized countries, such as Brazil. Cattle production in Brazil from 1977 to 2011 was spatialized, and the annual midpoint of production was calculated. Changes in the relative production and acceleration of production were calculated and spatialized using ARCGIS®. Cluster and canonical discriminant analyses were performed to further hi… Show more

“…[8, 12, 51], the dog-sheep cycle was confirmed, because fecal samples were collected in a farm for small ruminants, where dogs were fed offal of livestock (cattle and sheep). Historically, the Amazon Basin has been a mobile frontier of economic expansion with the spread of agropastoralism, mainly cattle ranching, from the 1970s onwards [52]. In Acre, livestock production primarily focuses on cattle but also includes sheep raising.…”

“…This methodology has been applied to other types of production, such as cattle [17] and sheep [27]. The RGR value is the percentage change within a period of time, being expressed by the following equation:…”

“…Growth rate represents a first order percentage difference in the sequence of the original data, whereas the growth acceleration represents a second order of differentiation that allows to evaluate the existence of a regional pole with constant growth in time or an isolated event of short duration. Both metrics were applied to understand the dynamics of the regional production of sheep [16] and cattle [17].…”

“…A remarkable increase in cattle herd in Brazil occurred from 1977 to 2012, with the Midwest region showing a high increase [1]. However, extending to new frontiers for Brazilian cattle herd is constraint to limited areas and consequently the yield of forage grass needs to be increased.…”
