Thermophysical and mechanical properties of two conjugated polymers, poly(p‐phenylene vinylene) (PPV) and polyacetylene (PA), are predicted using molecular dynamics simulations and compared with results obtained from differential scanning calorimetry, nanoindentation, and dynamic mechanical analysis experiments. Glass transition temperature (Tg) is calculated from the changes in the slopes of the specific volume versus temperature and cohesive energy density versus temperature plots, obtained from constant pressure and constant temperature simulations (NPT ensemble). The effects of temperature on the torsion angle distributions and characteristic ratio are analyzed. PPV is found to have a Tg of 416 ± 8 K. PA does not exhibit a glass transition in the temperature range of 120 to 500 K. Using the static deformation method, the values of Young's modulus are calculated to be 1.81 ± 0.34 GPa for PA and 9.20 ± 0.57 GPa for PPV at 298 K. These values are in good agreement with the experimental measurements, validating the suitability of these techniques in the prediction of the polymer properties.

Pressing of polyacetylene films before (or after) sorption of dopant can reduce significantly the rate of sorption (or desorption) due to reduced effective surface area and pore sue, as is found in the experiments of vapour sorption and desorption of hexane and iodine. On exposure to air, the pressed films have significantly lower oxidation rates at 120°C than the unpressed ones. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG:Das Pressen von Polyacetylenfilmen vor (oder nach) der Sorption von Dotierungsagentien kann die Geschwindigkeit der Sorption (oder Desorption) wegen der verringerten effektiven OberflBche und der PorengrODe sehr stark reduzieren. Dies wurde in Versuchen iiber die Sorption und Desorption von Hexan und Jod nachgewiesen. Bei der Einwirkung von Luft zeigen die geprefiten Filme wesentlich geringere Oxidationsgeschwindigkeiten bei 120 "C als die ungeprefiten.

Conductivity variations of iodine‐ and tungsten chloride‐doped polyacetylene under applied voltages

For iodine-and tungsten chloride (WCb)-doped polyacetylene (PA), conductivity shows decreasing with time on standing in inert atmosphere. The doping levels investigated for the former are 0.006 to 0.088 mol per mol, and for the latter 0.006 to 0.053. As a voltage is applied, the conductivity shows an accelerated decreasing with time. As the voltage increases further, the acceleration becomes more pronounced; and the doped PA can even break into two pieces as a critical voltage is reached. This critical voltage (1 1 .O V to 26.5 V for the iodine cases and 13 V to >40 V for the WCb cases) is found to increase with decreasing doping level. This break-down is attributed to the occurrence of nonuniform doping in the doped PA. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG:Die Leitffihigkeit mit Jod oder Wolframchlorid dotierten Polyacetylens fallt mit der Zeit auch in inerter AtmosphLre ab. Unter Spannung 1LOt die Leitfahigkeit beschleunigt nach, und zwar umso stlrker, je hbher die Spannung ist. Das Polyacetylen kann sogar, wenn eine kritische Spannung erreicht ist, in zwei Stucke zerbrechen.Diese kritische Spannung liegt umso hbher, desto niedriger der Dotierungsgrad ist .Der Bruch der Probe wird ungleichmaniger Dotierung zugeschrieben.
