Dynamic temperature estimation of power electronics systems

Abstract: This thesis proposes a method for accurate temperature estimation of thermally-aware power electronics systems. The duality between electrical systems and thermal systems was considered for thermal modeling. High dimensional thermal models present a challenge for online estimation. RC (resistor-capacitor) circuits that create a tradeoff between accuracy and complexity were used to simulate the dynamic thermal behavior of power electronics. The complexity of the thermal network was further reduced by applying a… Show more

“…They are typically more than 90% efficient in e-mobility systems; however, if the power levels are at the megawatt level, that is still tens of kilowatts of heat that need to be dissipated, usually in a very small volume. Their thermal models (37)(38)(39) are much slower, on the order of seconds, and do interact with other timescales in the system.…”

“…The switches on the PCB are the primary heat sources. The RC inverter model has been validated experimentally [42]. Further model order reduction was performed 3 Copyright © 2017 ASME to produce a nine-state model that preserves correspondence between the physical system and RC thermal model (Fig.…”
