Dynamic of phytoplankton size-class and photosynthetic activity in a tropical hypereutrophic lake: the Yaounde municipal lake (Cameroon)

Abstract: This study carried out within the framework of a multi-disciplinary project, aimed at highlighting the fundamental processes governing the functioning of the hypertrophic Yaoundé Municipal Lake. It was based on the hypothesis that, even within a small range of lake trophic status, important variations can occur in the species composition, biomass and photosynthetic activity of the phytoplankton size-fractions. For this purpose, samples were taken at weekly intervals from November 1996 to December 1997 at a fix… Show more

“…This might be due to the extent of pollution of the lake. The average DO value obtained (<5.2 mg/l) was below the minimum (>6 mg/l) of DO characteristic of normal biological conditions[20]. These low DO values could be due to the influx of waste water enriched in organic matter and inorganic substances.…”

“…Three phytoplanktonic size fractions were considered following Throndsen and Kemka et al (Throndsen, 1978;Kemka et al 2009) in this study: S1 \ 12 lm, 12 lm \ S2 \ 45 lm, and S3 [ 45 lm. The various phytoplankton size fractions were decided according to the protocols by Stockner (1988), Munawar et al (1978), Bailey-Watts (1986), Munawar & Munawar 1986), and Aleya & Amblard (1989).…”

“…Few studies from Cameroon have examined the phytoplankton communities in running water (Fonge et al, 2016;Fonge et al, 2015;Menye et al, 2012;Noumssi et al, 2021), lakes (Kemka et al, 2009); and oodplains (Fonge et al, 2012). Fonge et al (2015 and2016), studied rivers in the monomodal agroecological zone but their focus was on the trophic structure of the streams.…”
