Use of multivariate analysis to identify phytoplankton bioindicators of stream water quality in the monomodal equatorial agroecological zone of Cameroon

Abstract: The aquatic ecosystem is compromised by many contaminants that may lead to reduced ecosystem functions and severe consequences on human health. This study aimed at determining suitable bioindicators of water quality among the phytoplankton community for the biomonitoring of freshwater streams in the mono-modal agroecological zone of Cameroon. For this purpose, water physicochemical and hydrological parameters, together with the phytoplankton abundance and diversity were measured from June 2016 to May 2017 alon… Show more

“…Thus, the Shending River backwater area is mostly in a moderately eutrophic state during spring and summer, based on the average algal cell density (4.80 × 10 7 cells/L) of this water body. Water quality is also indicated by the Shannon-Wiener index of phytoplankton diversity [75][76][77]; an ecosystem with a high diversity index is considered to be healthy, while one with a low value is thought to be less so. According to this study's average phytoplankton diversity index (1.95) for the Shending River backwater area, it was moderately polluted and had a less healthy ecosystem, which was consistent with the findings of the evaluation of algae density.…”
