Dynamic-load-balancing algorithm suppressing the number of wavelength reallocations for λ-tunable WDM/TDM-PON

Abstract: We propose a dynamic-load-balancing algorithm that is derived using Jain's fairness index. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can distribute traffic loads among PON-branches quite fairly with a very small number of wavelength reallocations compared with a round-robin approach.

“…Advanced power savings is a function that reduces the number of working OLT ports when there is low traffic volume [12]. Dynamic load balancing is a function that transfers some of the traffic load from heavily loaded OLT ports to less burdened OLT ports [8], [13], [14]. For each function, ONUs connect to a new OLT port by performing λ-tuning according to the λ-tuning directions from the OLT port to which ONUs are originally assigned [15].…”

“…The very first hitless wavelength tuning scheme experiment was presented in [6] with an OLT and two ONUs. DWBA in [7] distributes the traffic to each wavelength fairly and suffers less from both wavelength reallocations and the tuning time drawbacks with a high messaging overhead. The studies in [8], [9] experimentally verified such a scheme and reduced the messaging overhead between OLT-ONU for the wavelength switching by delaying the ONU relocation until traffic load exceeds a pre-defined threshold.…”

“…Only recently, attention has been focused on DWBAs reducing penalties due to tuning time overhead. For example in [6], a DWBA is proposed that minimizes the number of wavelength reallocations and, as of consequence, the tuning time overhead penalties while attaining fairness in distributing traffic to OSUs. Such DWBA is experimentally demonstrated with 512 ONUs in [7].…”
