Dynamic Economic Dispatch and Control of a Stand-alone Microgrid in DongAo Island

Abstract: -A dynamic economic dispatch and control method is proposed to minimize the overall generating cost for a stand-alone microgrid in DongAo Island, which is integrated with wind turbine generator, solar PV, diesel generator, battery storage, the seawater desalination system and the conventional loads. A new dispatching strategy is presented based on the ranking of component generation costs and two different control modes, in which diesel generator and battery storage alternate to act as the master power source … Show more

“…In this paper, a 24-hour simulation studies were carried out to show the work done on dynamic economic dispatching for isolated microgrid. The rapid convergence and global optimality of the GA [13], and the simulation results obtained indicate the robustness of the proposed economic dispatching strategy for microgrids.…”

“…This paper intends to apply a heuristic modern optimization method, Genetic Algorithm (GA) [13], for day-ahead economic scheduling of an isolated microgrid, which runs once in a day followed by heuristic hourly decision adjustments based on real-time renewable generations and load demands in every hours of the day. A real industrial microgrid (Goldwind Smart Microgrid System), in Beijing, China, in stand-alone mode, is considered to deliver the power demand requirements of the various loads within the company (Goldwind Science and Etechwin Electric.…”

“…The basic theme of economic dispatch is to determine the optimal combination of power outputs of the generating units in electric power system so as to optimize the total fuel cost for a certain load demand satisfying operational constraints. The economic load dispatch (ELD) [1] problem is analyzed basically through the input output characteristic or through the heat rate input output characteristic by taking real power output of i th generating unit (PG i) in the X axis and fuel input in rupees per hour in the Y axis. Input-output characteristic is approximated as a single quadratic variation curve which gives sub-optimal solutions.…”

“…Kofinas et al demonstrated the potential scheduling of a PV only micro‐grid serving both the residential electricity demand and desalination plant, utilizing a Q‐learning algorithm to control the energy flow. Ma et al optimized the energy dispatch of a multi‐source, multi end‐use micro‐grid using a genetic algorithm (GA) on the data of a typical day, for the objective of minimizing operational cost. Karavas et al utilized particle swarm optimization to obtain the most economical design specifications for a PV‐wind powered polygeneration stand‐alone micro‐grid that simultaneously offers electricity, thermal energy, water and hydrogen fuel for a small Greek island, with hourly time‐series resolution and its objective function set to minimize the net present cost (NPC) of the system for a 20 year investment period.…”
