DVB-T ambiguity peaks reduction in passive radar applications based on signal reconstruction

Abstract: This paper deals with the reduction of the ambiguity peaks that appear in the Cross Ambiguity Function used in a passive radar system, which uses DVB-T signals as Illuminator of Opportunity. Three methods are proposed, consisting in replacing the elements that are responsible of the ambiguity peaks, by other elements that do not give rise to periodic components. Ideal 64-QAM symbols, zero power components, and random segments with mean power equal to the acquired signal power, are used for this purpose. The ob… Show more

“…γ(θ) is the sum of L correlations between the acquired signal S(k) (composed of one single DVB-T MX from s ref [n] or s surv [n]) and a copy delayed a number of samples, N , equal to the number of OFDM useful symbol samples; L is the cyclic prefix number of samples (15). Φ(θ) is an energy term defined in ( 16) and ρ is a weighting-factor that depends on the Signal-to-Noise Ratio, SNR (17).…”

“…A target, T x , will generate a CAF local maximum at ( m x , p x ) associated with the target bistatic delay, τmx, and Doppler shift, fDpx. Other components of the received signals are the clutter, the direct path interference (DPI) and the specific elements of the IoO signal, which generate artefacts or ambiguity peaks [4, 7].…”

“…Digital video broadcasting‐terrestrial (DVB‐T) is of special interest due to its availability (it is widely implemented, and DVB‐T2 is operative in some countries, and under consideration for mid‐term in others), transmitted power and waveform [4–7]. Most of the demonstrators were validated in aerial scenarios (i.e.…”

“…In [ 17 ], methods for reducing the ambiguity peaks in the cross-ambiguity function were investigated for the PCL system with DVB-T illumination signals. Three methods were proposed to replace the elements responsible for the ambiguity peaks with ideal 64-Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM) symbols, zero power components, and finally, random segments.…”
