Duty cycle of the radio galaxy B2 0258+35

Abstract: Context. Radio loud active galactic nuclei (AGN) are episodic in nature, cycling through periods of activity and quiescence. The study of this duty cycle has recently gained new relevance because of the importance of AGN feedback for galaxy evolution. Aims. In this work we investigate the duty cycle of the radio galaxy B2 0258+35, which was previously suggested to be a restarted radio galaxy based on its morphology. The radio source consists of a pair of kpc-scale jets embedded in two large-scale lobes (∼240 k… Show more

“…This asymmetry both in brightness and morphology suggests an interaction with the ISM, similar to that seen in IC 5063 ). The age of B2 0258+35 is estimated to be between 0.4 Myr (Brienza et al 2018) and 0.9 Myr (Giroletti et al 2005). Following the correlation between the age and the size of the source (Orienti & Dallacasa 2014;Murgia 2003), it has also been found that the source is smaller than expected for this age, given an unconstrained expansion.…”

“…Following the correlation between the age and the size of the source (Orienti & Dallacasa 2014;Murgia 2003), it has also been found that the source is smaller than expected for this age, given an unconstrained expansion. This suggests that it may have been confined within the host galaxy for a protracted length of time (Brienza et al 2018). However, we note that a hypothesis based on the above-mentioned correlations alone is quite uncertain, but as we show in the subsequent sections, the H i absorption and CO emission studies further strengthen this hypothesis.…”

“…Among recent ones, Konar et al (2013) studied two double-double RG (J0116-4722 and J1158+2621), concluding that the eldest couple of lobes are the result of an active phase that lasted ∼100 Myr on average, with a quiescent period of about 1 Myr before the AGN reignited into the second phase. Brienza et al (2018) investigated the spectral properties of the outer lobes of another known double-double RG (B2 0258+35), finding that either they are still fueled, or the jets feeding them switched off less than ∼10 Myr ago. In other cases, a longer pause between the two phases has been found (∼100 Myr, Jamrozy et al 2007).…”

“…Also among extended radio sources and radio galaxies there are cases which present a number of similarities with NGC 3998. Some examples have been discussed in Brienza et al (2018). In particular it is worth mentioning B2 0258+35 and Cen A as two cases of low-power radio galaxies with a very high surface brightness contrast between the central regions and the large scales lobes.…”
