Dust Storms are an Indication of an Unhealthy Environment in East Asia

Abstract: Dust storms frequently occur in Mongolia and in northern China. Each year there are 30 to 120 dusty days in source regions of Mongolia and 14-20 dusty days on the Korean Peninsula. Intense sand storms and associated dust falls produce environmental impacts in East Asia. This paper discusses the environmental degradation in Mongolia and the social, economic and atmospheric impacts of dust storms in the sink area. The impact of dust storms on environmental compartments as well as their direct and indirect conseq… Show more

“…The critical elements are the availability of fresh water, air quality and temperature (Karaca, 2012;Kuo-Jen et al, 2012). The water in the form of rain becomes important in regulating temperature and its relationship with extreme events, such as drought and dust storms, among others (Sun et al, 2003;Batjargal et al, 2006;Zhang et al, 2012).…”

“…This change is potentially harmful to people´s health (Razo et al, 2004;Rashki et al, 2011) and could affect the albedo at the level of the surface of the Earth and the atmosphere (Batjargal et al, 2006;Hak-Sung et al, 2011). “…And, finally, how are traditional power relations impacted upon by the arrival of mining and the consequent development initiatives? Historically these types of questions have been taken up by theorists in the Development field (See; Escobar 1992;Sen 1999;Inglehart 2005;Batjargal et al 2006;Graulau 2008).…”

“…Not surprisingly then, one of the most common impacts described to me by people living in the vicinity of both the mine sites were those impacts that affected animals and land, particularly decreased water and increased dust. The South Gobi area is prone to strong winds that create episodic dust incidence -they are occurrences that can last a couple of hours or a few days between 30-120 times a year (Batjargal et al 2006) (see Image 10). These types of weather events are well-understood by local herders.…”
