Introduction Cement dust emitted during cement manufacture consists of toxic components. Occupational cement dust exposure may cause inflammation in the human body, which may be detected early by observing changes in blood parameters such as red blood cell distribution width (RDW) and mean corpuscular volume (MCV). Objectives The study aims to observe the effect of occupational cement dust exposure on RDW and MCV. Methods This study was performed in the Department of Physiology of Dhaka Medical College, Dhaka, Bangladesh, and a factory in Munshiganj, Bangladesh, from September 2017 to August 2018. Ninety-two participants between 20 and 50 years were included (46 subjects were occupationally exposed to cement dust, and 46 were not exposed to cement dust). A pre-designed questionnaire was used for data collection. An independent sample t-test was used to analyze basic information, such as blood pressure and BMI. The multivariate regression model was used to analyze the effect of cement dust exposure on the study group. The impact of cement dust exposure duration was analyzed using the multivariate regression model. The level of significance was p < 0.05. The statistical analysis was performed using STATA-15 (StataCorp, College Station, TX), and the graphical presentation used GraphPad Prism v8.3.2. Results The cement dust-exposed participants had a significantly higher value of MCV by 1.19 fi (95% CI = 0.02, 4.84; p = 0.049) and a 5.92% increase in RDW (95% CI = 5.29, 6.55; p < 0.001) than that of the control group. Conclusion The study reveals that exposure to cement dust causes significant changes in RDW and MCV. These changes may indicate hemolysis due to inflammation.

The kiln area is an area that has a very complex hazard potential in the cement production process. This study aimed to assess the risks of occupational safety and health during the production process in the kiln area of PT. X uses the bowtie method. This study used a qualitative descriptive design. The informants used were three managers of the clinker production department, one safety manager, and one field operator. Research data were collected through interviews and observations. The data were analyzed qualitatively using the bowtie method. The study results stated that hot dust could be dangerous if it comes out of the system caused by positive pressure, such as the Induced Draft Fan (IDF) turning off, causing losses such as burns to workers. Heat can be dangerous if it experiences a significant increase due to excess fuel, causing losses, such as health-related illnesses. Preventive controls were carried out such as routine inspections. Mitigation controls were carried out such as light signals. Escalation factors can thwart hot dust and heat control, such as the deformation of raw meals. Escalation factor control, such as the implementation of work instructions. PT. X has carried out control in the kiln area, but additional controls are needed.

Spray drying is one of the most preferred preservation methods that converts an aqueous feed containing solvent, carrier agent, and food compounds into dry powder with superb physicochemical and functional properties. This paper reviews the fundamental and important operating parameters, product characteristics, current and potential applications, and techno-economic aspects of spray drying. The key operating parameters should be chosen to achieve the highest spray drying performance in terms of operational efficiency and product quality. A successful spray drying operation is greatly dependent on the feed material properties, the mechanical design of the equipment, and selected operating parameters. This paper also found that water content, water activity, and glass transition temperature are the main parameters that really determine product quality in terms of shelf life and storage conditions of food powder obtained from the spray drying process. Recent advances in the development of new heatless spray drying technology in the manufacture of food flavoring and nutraceuticals are interesting to develop, in addition to the potential to produce nano-sized powders with distinctive properties and the use of superheated steam and carbon dioxide to sterilize products. The appropriate information on spray drying technology featured in this paper is targeted to reinforce researcher and practitioner understanding for widening its applications in pertinent food industries.
