Duration of Analgesic Use and Risk of Hearing Loss in Women

Abstract: Aspirin, nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAID), and acetaminophen are commonly used. Frequent use of analgesics has been associated with a higher risk of hearing loss. However, the association between duration of analgesic use and the risk of hearing loss is unclear. We investigated the relationship between duration of analgesic use and self-reported hearing loss among 55,850 women in the Nurses' Health Study. Cox proportional hazards regression was used to adjust for potential confounders. During 873,37… Show more

“…To the best of our knowledge, this is the largest series evaluating HL in AS. Another strength of the our study was that we performed objective audiometry rather than using subjective self‐reported HL, which earlier studies have done to see the relation between NSAID intake and hearing loss . A limitation of the study was that NSAID intake was noted using recall and prescriptions available with the patient rather than by prospective observation of drug intake.…”

“…Some of the studies reported here showed HL/VL in patients who were on methadone treatment and then overdosed on other drugs, or patients who misused prescription opioids and acetaminophen (Nicoucar et al 2005). Human studies have shown that there is a higher risk of HL with the combined use of other analgesics and acetaminophen (Curhan et al 2010, 2012; Lin et al 2017), which may be linked to an oxidative stress mechanism (Yorgason et al 2010; Kalinec et al 2014; McGill et al 2016). Given these concomitant drug uses, it is difficult to extrapolate whether the HL/VL was related to one specific substance versus the other or polysubstance use, confounding the results.…”
