Hearing loss in ankylosing spondylitis

Abstract: Aim: Several studies have described sensorineural deafness in ankylosing spondylitis (AS) patients while conductive hearing loss has been reported to be rare. In our study we have studied the prevalence of hearing loss (HL) among AS patients and its association with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) intake. Methods:We studied 100 AS patients and 40 controls. HL was defined as pure-tone thresholds greater than 20 dB (decibel) in at least two frequencies of the audiogram.Severity of HL was defined as … Show more

“…The prevalence of AS in males was found to be 0.42%, which is 2.8 times higher than that in females, resulting in a statistically significant difference between the sexes. This finding is consistent with the general AS epidemiological finding that males have a higher prevalence than females [1,4,31]. The prevalence of AS in both the southern and northern populations of mainland China in this study was 0.31%, indicating no significant difference according to geographical region.…”

“…The results of the present study showed that the prevalence rates are higher than 0.24% in the community population and 0.23% in the military population reported in Swee's 2007 research [1] and exhibit an increasing tendency. The global average prevalence of AS is 0.1-1% [4,29,30]. The prevalence rates of AS in China are in the relatively low range compared to those worldwide, for example, the rates reported in the current study are lower than those reported in Norway (1.1-1.4%) and in indigenous Alaskan populations (0.4%).…”

“…The longer the course of the disease, the higher the activity of the disease and the more obvious are the systemic symptoms. It was found in studies with an average course of > 8 years that the longer the duration of AS, the greater the risk of cardiovascular disease, hearing loss, and poor physical mobility [ 70 , 71 ]. At the same time, AS causes the lung interstitium to develop lesions at an early stage, and the range of lesions increases with the duration of the disease [ 72 ].…”

“…(3) AS is a subtype of axSpA and presents typical radiographic man ifestations. AS can cause physiological damage, d isability, and neurological deafness (4), (5) leading to reduced quality of life (QOL) and placing a substantial financial burden (6)Health-related quality of life (HRQo L) co mprises the functional effect of the disorder and its treat ment, as perceived by the patient. Patients with AS frequently report high levels of pain, gradual affection of spinal mov ement, fatigue following simple activity, sleep d isturbance and depression (7) Poor Qo L in AS patients was significantly associated with more severe rad iological changes, as indicated by severe kyphosis (8) The strongest predictors of ASQo L were BASDA I, ASDAS, peripheral arthritis and BASFI.…”
