Dural Melanoma Associated with Ocular Melanosis and Multiple Blue Nevi

Abstract: CNS melanoma is regarded as an extremely aggressive disease with poor prognosis. This case and previous reports of dural melanomas occurring in isolation or with Nevus of Ota have demonstrated relatively prolonged survival after surgical intervention. We conclude that dural melanomas are less aggressive tumors requiring surgical extirpation only.

“…A total of 10 arose within nevi of Ota and 3 in nevi of Ito . In addition to these cutaneous melanomas arising in association with nevi of Ota and Ito, over 40 cases of primary melanoma of the uveal tract (choroid, iris and ciliary body), orbital soft tissues, central nervous system, meninges and dura have been reported in association with nevi of Ota . We could not identify reports of malignant transformation of Mongolian spot.…”

“…On CT imaging, primary CNS melanomas appear as dense or slightly dense shadows with varying contrast enhancement (Greco Crasto et al, 2001;Lee et al, 2010;Rivers et al, 2001;Somers et al, 2013). However, CT has limitations and cannot accurately visualize all microscopic or diffuse meningeal lesions.…”

“…Multiple blue nevi in association with nevus of Ota have rarely been documented. 4 Unlike Mongolian spots and nevus of Ota, blue nevi are typically acquired and more common in whites. They are usually solitary or few, but eruptive lesions have been reported.…”
