Durability Studies on the Recycled Aggregate Concrete in China over the Past Decade: A Review

Abstract: Since China hosted the Olympic Games in 2008, a mass of construction and demolition (C&D) wastes were produced with the rapid urbanization construction. Recycling the C&D waste into recycled aggregates (RA) is an effective method for reducing the amount of C&D wastes. Many studies on the properties of RA and the durability of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) were conducted in China over the past decade. Due to the restrictions of various languages, some valuable studies on the durability of RAC are hard to be… Show more

“…The corrosion resistance was not influenced by the high permeability, low density and low mechanical resistance of the GC with which the M100-S-304 specimen was made. By data fitting, the durability properties generally decrease linearly with the increase of RCA replacement and the average water absorption rate [ 103 ]. The concrete containing NA and RCA showed a carbonation rate of 1.8 times higher [ 104 ].…”

“…Abrasion is a durability property that causes damage on the surface of concrete and loss of durability in the course of time. Since the abrasion resistance is directly related with compressive strength of concrete, abrasion resistance may decrease with RFA content (Ma et al 2019). In literature, the abrasion properties of RFA-containing concretes have not been examined comprehensively.…”

“…These techniques have been demonstrated as being effective in mitigating the negative effects on durability of RAC, in terms of reduced resistance to chloride penetration, sulfate attack, carbonation penetration, and freeze-thaw cycles, attributed to the reasons outlined above (Zhu et al, 2016;Guo et al, 2018;Ma et al, 2019;Berredjem et al, 2020). The presence of higher CSH gel in RAC, because of higher binder content in the attached mortar, can also contribute to chloride binding (Guo et al, 2018).…”
