a b s t r a c tThe mechanism of grain refinement was studied in titanium subjected to high-rate surface mechanical attrition treatment. By cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy, the deformation structures were systematically characterized in a nanocrystalline (NC) layer of the treated surface which exhibits a grain size gradient. The microstructural evolution with increasing strain involves (1) the formation of slip bands with dislocation-free cells in their interiors, (2) nucleation and migration of high-angle grain boundaries at cell boundaries consisting of high-density tangled dislocations, leading to the formation of submicrosized grains inside the slip bands, followed by (3) the formation of subgrains and dislocation cells inside the submicrosized grains with increasing misorientations, which finally become NC grains. The mechanism of grain refinement was interpreted in terms of the classical migration dynamic recrystallization (DRX) and continuous rotation DRX, respectively, leading to submicrosized and NC grains with increasing strains at high strain rates. The cooperative grain boundary sliding is active at high strain rate, by the presence of arrays of coplanar grain boundaries.

Influence of Ultrafine‐Grained Layer on Gaseous Nitriding of Large‐Sized Titanium Plate

In this paper, mechanical shot blasting on a large sized titanium plate is conducted to induce severe plastic deformation, which generates an ultrafinegrained surface layer. The effect of an ultrafine-grained layer on nitriding is evaluated at nitriding temperatures from 600 to 850 C. The structural phases and mechanical property improvements are investigated and compared to those of a coarse-grained specimen by using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and mechanical property measurements. The results indicate that an ultrafine-grained layer enhances the nitriding kinetics and produces a thicker nitrided layer than that of a coarse-grained plate at the same gaseous nitriding temperatures. The improved kinetics are attributed to a greater number of grain boundaries and defects introduced into the titanium plate surface by the mechanical shot blasting treatment. Meanwhile, the surface and cross-sectional hardness values improve compared to the coarse-grained plate due to the thicker nitrided layer resulting from deeper nitrogen diffusion.

A New Inner Surface Attrition Treatment for Strengthening Metallic Tubular Structures

Based on analytical modeling and simulation aided calculations, a systematic assessment of the surface mechanical attrition treatment (SMAT) on the inner surface of a metallic tubular structure, is presented in this work for the first time. With the help of extensive statistical analysis and dynamic simulations, an optimal design of the key SMAT components is theoretically derived for the best inner surface attrition effect, which is thereafter used for the quasi-static uniaxial compression tests. A remarkable strengthening effect from the inner surface treatment is observed, which can be attributed to the formation of nano-twins and nano e-martensite structures due to the severe pre-processed strain. Interestingly, no α'-martensite is observed through transmission electron microscope (TEM). This work provides a framework for the optimal design of attrition treatment for complex surfaces, which can thus greatly extend the application of SMAT technology.
