The duplex treatment of AISI 420 steel samples by nitriding in a radiofrequency inductively coupled plasma (RF-ICP) discharge of Ar + N2 + H2 atmosphere followed by CrAlN coating deposition was performed in this study. The influence of plasma nitriding (PN) duration (10, 20, 40, and 60 min) on the structural and functional properties of the duplex-treated samples was determined. A non-linear dependence of AISI 420 steel nitriding kinetics was found on the square root of the PN duration. The thicknesses of the compound layer (CL) and nitrogen diffusion zone (DZ) in the samples and their phase composition resulted in different critical loads of coating failures under adhesion tests. Increasing the load-bearing capacity by the PN caused coating hardening in duplex-treated samples. The role of the PN duration on the wear characteristics of the AISI 420 steel samples after the duplex treatment has been discussed. Corrosion tests of AISI 420 steel demonstrated the significant enhancement (5–67 times) of its corrosion resistance in a 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution after duplex treatment.

Blanking operation is widely used to cut sheet or plates by a shearing process between punch and die. The process of shearing and the conditions of the sheared surface are influenced by the punch, the die, the speed of punching, the clearance between the punch and the die. In this study, effects of high speed blanking on surface quality and corrosion properties of mild steel St37 shear surface have been investigated. The work presented in this paper aims at evaluating the shear surface quality improvements of the St37 resulting from the use of high energy rate forging machine. The appraisal is based on criteria related to surface accuracy and corrosion resistance characterization. For this purpose, St37 mild steels were cut using three different punch speeds hydraulic presses at nearly quasistatic, conventional mechanical presses at low punch velocity (0.2 m/s) and high energy rate forging machine at high punch velocity (10 m/s), for different die clearances (4.5%-6% of sheet thickness). After accelerated corrosion tests, blanks were performed in conjunction with scanning electron microscopy technique to study the cutting process of the blanks at room temperature. In fact, by using high energy rate forging machine, a reduction of more than 25% of the surface roughness (Ra) was realized and better resistance to stress corrosion cracking and pitting corrosion was noticed. It was observed that the corrosion resistance of the high energy rate forging-cut specimen was better than that of the hydraulic-cut and mechanical-cut specimens.

S IMULATOR Plasma Source for Planar Electrodes, SPSPE, was designed to verify the experimental results of planar anode and cathode which were obtained previously using nitrogen gas. Experimentally, the glow discharge was carried out at operating pressure values in the range of 0.1 -0.6 Torr and the distance between the disc anode -disc cathode distance equal to 10 cm using nitrogen gas. The comparison between SPSPE and the experimental values at different product of pressure and distance values for breakdown voltage, discharge current and the second Townsend coefficient using nitrogen gas was made. It was found a good match between SPSPE and the experimental values. Also, the first Townsend coefficient was calculated by SPSPE at different product of pressure and distance values using nitrogen gas, while breakdown voltage and discharge current were calculated by SPSPE at different product of pressure and distance values using nitrogen, argon and carbon dioxide gases. It was found that the minimum breakdown voltage values equal to 472.77, 232.26 and 349.27 volts at minimum product of pressure and distance values equal to 1.5, 1 and 0.75 Torr.cm using nitrogen, argon and carbon dioxide gases, respectively. Also, it was found that the minimum discharge current values equal to 0.5228 mA and 3.65 mA at minimum product of pressure and distance value equal to 1 Torr. cmusing nitrogen and argon gases, respectively. While minimum discharge current value equal to 7.8 mA was obtained at minimum product of pressure and distance value equal to 0.75 Torr.cm using carbon dioxide gas.
