DUF538 Protein Super Family is Predicted to be the Potential Homologue of Bactericidal/Permeability-Increasing Protein in Plant System

Abstract: DUF538 protein super family includes a number of plant proteins that their role is not yet clear. These proteins have been frequently reported to be expressed in plants under various stressful stimuli such as bacteria and elicitors. In order to further understand about this protein family we utilized bioinformatics tools to analyze its structure in details. As a result, plants DUF538 was predicted to be the partial structural homologue of BPI (bactericidal/permeability increasing) proteins in mammalian innate … Show more

“…Two DUF538 proteins were also found only in grain and not in vegetative organs of B. distachyon (Bradi1g25270 and Bradi4g21520). This protein family was recently nominated as the potential structural and functional homolog of the BPI (Bactericidal/Permeability Increasing) protein in plants .…”

“…Proteins belonging to this family have not been studied in detail. However, they are suggested to be the homolog of the bactericidal/permeability increasing proteins in mammals (Gholizadeh and Kohnehrouz, 2013). DUF538 was proposed as a candidate protein that activates the plant response to abiotic and biotic stresses (Gholizadeh 2011).…”

“…Despite this, the nomination of DUF538 protein family as the potential structural and functional homologue of BPI protein in plants, not only provide a basis to study the potent biological functions of this protein family in the innate immune system of mammalians but also it open a new gate to investigate the homologues of DUF538 members in these organisms, too (Gholizadeh and Baghbankohnehrouz 2013).…”

“…DUF538 proteins are recently known to have the structural and functional signatures of bactericidal permeability increasing proteins in the immune system of mammalians (Gholizadeh and Baghbankohnehrouz 2013) and the water soluble chlorophyll binding proteins 1 in the photosynthetic apparatus of plants (Takahashi et al 2013). Later on, finding of structural similarity between BPI and esterase type hydrolase enzymes (Gholizadeh 2014) helped us to make this idea that DUF538 protein superfamily may be a member of hydrolases and degrades chlorophyll molecules in stress-challenged plants (considering DUF538 domain containing protein superfamily as stress-related proteins in plants).…”
