Dual T1/T2 MRI contrast agent based on hybrid SPION@coordination polymer nanoparticles

Abstract: A novel dual T1/T21H-MRI contrast agent based on the encapsulation of super-paramagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) with an iron coordination polymer is proposed.

“…The iron-based NCPs exhibit a signal enhancement in a concentration-dependent manner and a T 1 positive contrast of r 1 = 0. 49 However, they present a high T 2 negative contrast, which make these nanoparticles a very promising T 2 contrast agent with r 2 relaxivities nearly 25 times higher than Gd-DTPA.…”

“…38 Thus, a low r 2 /r 1 ratio (<5) is considered to be ideal for positive MRI contrast agents. 39 As is observed in Fig. 6, the r 1 value obtained for the Eu(5%):NaGd (MoO 4 ) 2 @citrate sample at 1.5 T was very high (8.96 mM −1 s −1 ), whereas r 2 was 5.03 mM −1 s −1 , resulting in an r 2 /r 1 ratio of 1.78, which is among the lowest values ever reported for Gd containing nanoparticles 5,16,40 making our system appropriate as a positive MRI contrast agent.…”
