Dual-Mode Intracranial Catheter Integrating 3D Ultrasound Imaging and Hyperthermia for Neuro-oncology: Feasibility Study

Abstract: In this study, the performances of one-dimensional and two-dimensional least-squares strain estimators (LSQSE) are compared. Furthermore, the effects of kernel size are examined using simulated raw frequency data of a widely-adapted hard lesion/soft tissue model. The performances of both methods are assessed in terms of root-mean-squared errors (RMSE), elastographic signal-to-noise ratio (SNRe) and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNRe). RMSE analysis revealed that the 2D LSQSE yields better results for phased array d… Show more

“…11 In this work, our goal was to develop a heating device that uses an interstitial approach with an ultrasound-based applicator. Various designs of miniature therapeutic ultrasound transducers have been proposed for performing thermal ablation via endovascular, 12 interstitial, 13,14 and transesophageal 15 access for treatments in the heart, 14 liver, 16,17 brain, 12,18 and other organs. These devices have diameters ranging from 3 to 10 mm and operate at frequencies of 3-10 MHz.…”

“…For each systolic frame a region-of-interest corresponding to the upper half segment of the vessel wall was manually selected for which strains were to be computed, tracked and accumulated from systole to diastole. Strain calculation was performed using a 2D cross-correlation based coarse-to-fine strain estimation strategy followed by displacement compounding, tracking, rotation and 2D least squares strain estimation, see Table 1 for detailed settings of the compound strain estimation [8, 10, 27, 28]. The algorithm provided strain values for every 62.5 μm (vertically) by 200 μm (horizontally) of tissue.…”

“…In a porcine animal model, the ultrasound images matched the MR slices provided by the image guidance device. 13 Others have proposed the use of intracranial endosonography 14,15 ; however, interpretation of images remains difficult. Importantly, endosonography allowed real-time monitoring of the development of an experimentally induced ICH.…”
