Dual Behavior of Suspended Sediment Concentration in a Regulated River

Abstract: Better understanding of suspended sediment transport processes allows for better management of both rivers and coasts. Based on field data and sediment transport energy theory, this study presents an analysis on the suspended sediment hysteresis in the Lower Tenryu River of Japan in connection to the channel carrying capacity of suspended sediment and morphological characteristics. The transport of suspended sediment in the river exhibited dual behaviors according to the magnitude of flood. It was transport-li… Show more

“…The diversified rock bottom relief impacts high water turbulence and, thus, the transport of weathered loads (Priess et al, 2015;Szatten, 2016). Stationary tests with a high measurement frequency are then performed to determine the relationship between flooding and suspension concentration in particular years (Huan, 2011). On the other hand, in the Beskidy catchments, which include the variability of the transported clastic weathered water, quantitative relationships between hydrological parameters and their supply against the background of water erosion have been shown (Brański, 1975;Brański, 1990).…”

“…There are five major dams along the main river, namely, Yasuoka Dam, Hiraoka Dam, Sakuma Dam, Akiba Dam, and Funagira Dam (Fig 1). The largest one is Sakuma Dam [15], which was the 10th biggest dam in Japan at the time of its construction in 1956.…”
