Dual-band Sierpinski fractal monopole antenna

Abstract: -A new top-loaded reduced-sized dual-band monopole antenna for wireless communications is presented. The antenna provides better than -15 dB input return loss and keeps the same radiation pattern over both bands. In addition, a low-profile performance is achieved.

“…The origins of the presented novel technique can be found in [9], where a modified Sierpinski gasket was top-loaded with a pseudo-triangular loop element so as to reduce the antenna size, as compared to the Sierpinski gasket monopole [10 -12]. As a result of that work, several top-loading schemes based on different structures were analyzed and characterized.…”

“…However, since the spacing between bands is closely linked to its self-similar structure, the spacing between bands is fixed at 2 [2]. Alternatively, top-loading can be added to the Sierpinski monopole in order to control the spacing between bands and the input impedance at the lower resonances of the antenna [3]. In addition, by modifying the Sierpinski monopole flare angle, the antenna pattern at the different resonances can be tailored, as described in [4].…”

“…Recently, an intensive study of the propagation of electromagnetic waves in media with negative permittivity and permeability has been presented in the literature [1][2][3][4][5][6]. Some unique properties, such as a negative index of refraction, supporting backward waves, and so forth, have been shown.…”

“…Since the pioneering work of Mandelbrot and others, a wide verity of application for fractals continue to be found in many branch of science and engineering. One such area is fractal electrodynamics [2][3][4][5] in which fractal geometry is combined electromagnetic theory for purpose of investigating a new class of radiation, propagation and scattering problems.…”
