A wide range of clinical applications are reported for doxorubicin (DOX), yet both people and research animals experience substantial tissue damage. However, the protective mechanism of lutein, a natural carotenoid against doxorubicin associated liver toxicity has not been fully studied. Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate the protective mechanism of lutein in doxorubicin-induced liver damage. Twenty male Wistar rats were randomly assigned to four groups and treated as follows: Group 1 was administered 10 ml/kg body weight of distilled water intraperitoneally for a duration of 28 days. Group 2 was administered Doxorubicin (15 mg/kg body weight) intraperitoneally for three days in a row. Group 3 was administered intraperitoneal injections of Lutein (40 mg/kg body weight) daily for 28 days, and Group 4 was administered intraperitoneal injections of Lutein (40 mg/kg body weight) daily for 25 days and three days in a row of injections of Doxorubicin (15 mg/kg body weight). Our results showed that lutein reduced levels of AST, ALT, ALP, LDH, MDA, nitrite, beclin-1, caspase-3, IL-6 as well as TNF-α against the increase caused by doxorubicin. GSH, SOD, GST, catalase, mTOR as well as Bcl-2 were markedly increased by lutein against the harmful effect of doxorubicin. Moreso, lutein restored normal histoarchitecture as well as reduced fibrosis. In conclusion, Lutein protection against doxorubicin-induced liver damage in male Wistar rat is associated with inhibition of oxidative stress, pro-inflammatory reactions and modulation of Beclin-1/mTOR activities

This review describes the phytopharmacological activities of Spondias mombin. Spondias mombin (S. mombin) is a fructiferous tree native to tropical areas like America, Brazil, Nigeria and West India. It belongs to the cashew family of Anacardiaceae. Spondias mombin has been used as an herbal medicine from ancient times. Spondias mombin plant parts (leaves, bark, seeds, and fruits) are used for therapeutic purposes. Traditionally, the plant is being used in inducing labour, preventing miscarriages, reducing inflammation, reducing blood glucose level, amongst others. Various plant parts are also used for non-medicinal purposes like the production of cider-like drinks, wine, soap and ornamental purposes. The main bioactive compounds reported in S. mombin include tannins, phenols, saponins, anthraquinones, berberine, naphthoquinones, sesquiterpenes, indole and quinoline alkaloids, proanthocyanins, and flavonoids. Spondias mombin possesses beneficial pharmacological properties that are well-utilized in medicinal herbal therapy of several disease conditions.

Diabetes mellitus and hypertension are common comorbidities, as hypertension is reported to be twice as frequent in diabetic patients as people who are non- diabetics. In diabetic condition, the risk and progression of cardiac disease, peripheral vascular disease, stroke, retinopathy, and nephropathy is greatly increased in the presence of hypertension. Persistent increase in blood pressure termed hypertension, can be either primary hypertension (essential hypertension) or secondary hypertension in nature. Primary or essential hypertension is characterized by elevated blood pressure caused by inherited factors which are characteristic of essential hypertension whereas identifiable causes such as chronic kidney diseases, endocrine disorders, constriction of the kidney arteries, or the use of drugs are among the etiology of secondary hypertension. Diabetes causes hyperinsulinemia which increases the risk of hypertension. This condition increases the amount of sodium that the body absorbs. It also promotes the stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system. Treatment of both conditions is crucial as they are considered risk factors for coronary artery disease, cerebrovascular disease, renal failure and congestive heart failure. In any age group, a considerable increase in systolic blood pressure causes a significant increase in cardiovascular disease. To achieve sufficient blood pressure control, most people with hypertension and diabetes require more than one medication. This review is aimed to discuss hypertension and diabetes mellitus comorbidities and their treatment.
