Dry Eye Disease Among Mongolian and Han Older Adults in Grasslands of Northern China: Prevalence, Associated Factors, and Vision-Related Quality of Life

Abstract: Purpose: Dry eye disease (DED) is projected to have increasing public health burden in China with the aging population. No published studies on the epidemiology of DED have been found in grasslands. We estimated DED prevalence among older adults living in grasslands of northern China and investigated its associated factors and impact on vision-related quality of life (VR-QoL).Methods: A multistage cluster random sampling technique was used to select Mongolian and Han participants aged over 40 from November 202… Show more

“…12 Likewise, dry eye has a devastating effect upon patients’ quality of life. 13 Furthermore, dry eye in patients with underlying systemic autoimmune disease causes high risk of depression and anxiety. 14 Herein, prompt detection of dry eye has a key role to perform the appropriate intervention that could increase quality of life most patients.…”

“…20 Literature shows a wide variation of DED assessment both using objective and questionnaire methods and noted a high prevalence of DED globally. 1,[21][22][23][24][25][26] The variations in magnitude and severity of DES in different studies could be due to differential behavior of using digital devices, humidity, temperatures of the study area and comorbidities.…”

“…Dry eye disease (DED) is a multifactorial disorder characterized by loss of the tear film homeostasis accompanied by several ocular symptoms [ 7 , 8 ]. DED is prevalent in 5.3–34.5% of the population, and its incidence seems to have increased over time [ 9 , 10 ]. Punctate epithelial erosion (PEE) as evaluated according to the corneal fluorescein staining (CFS) score is one of the critical diagnostic features of DED, in addition to tear break-up time, ocular surface disease index score, and Schirmer test score [ 11 , 12 ].…”
