Dry and Noncontact EEG Sensors for Mobile Brain–Computer Interfaces

Abstract: Abstract-Dry and noncontact electroencephalographic (EEG) electrodes, which do not require gel or even direct scalp coupling, have been considered as an enabler of practical, real-world, brain-computer interface (BCI) platforms. This study compares wet electrodes to dry and through hair, noncontact electrodes within a steady state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) BCI paradigm. The construction of a dry contact electrode, featuring fingered contact posts and active buffering circuitry is presented. Additionally,… Show more

“…However, many other directions may be relatively close to market, catalyzed by more portable, practical, comfortable, and powerful tools to record the EEG. [9,10] Companies have been selling systems called 'BCIs' for home use for a several years, which often incorporate affective information into games and help buyers monitor concentration or relaxation. Noninvasive systems that do not require medical certification and rely on inexpensive, practical electrodes could get aBCI technologies to users fairly quickly.…”

“…However, it is mainly used for pulse measurements by the Einthoven I lead. Nowadays, through the technology of capacitive electrodes, it is even possible to measure the electroencephalogram (EEG), or the ECG through cloths [2,3]. The automotive industry is one of the first institutions, which implemented the ECG into the driver's seat [4,5,6].…”
