Drugs causing fixed eruptions

Abstract: Forty patients having fixed drug eruptions were subjected to provocation tests. Twelve patients failed to complete the provocation tests while in the remaining, the causative drugs were shown to be tetracyclines (6), analgin (metamizole) (6), oxyphenbutazone (5), phenobarbitone (4), sulphadiazine (3), sulphaphenazole (2), penicillin (1), suphadimethoxone (1), Saridon (1), sulphadimidine (1) and sulphamethoxypryridazine (1). There was evidence of cross-sensitivity between tetracycline and demethylchlortetracycl… Show more

“…3 The commonly used drugs causing FDE are antibiotics such as trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, penicillin, tetracycline and erythromycin followed by non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) like diclofenac sodium, aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen and also some of the antiepileptics. 5 In this case, patient developed adverse reaction within one day following administration of doxycycline. Naranjo's algorithm (Naranjo, 1981) was used to determine a plausible reaction due to doxycycline.…”

“…In a study by Pasricha in 1987, tetracyclines were responsible for the maximum number of cases. 17 In a study by Gupta in 2003, cotrimoxazole accounted for the maximum number of cases. 18 However, this study shows concordance with a latest study on ADR in 2012, which reports increasing incidence of FDE with NSAIDs.…”

“…However Tetracyclines were reported to be commonest as per Parischa JS. [10] NSAIDS like phenazone (Antipyrine), Metamizole and barbiturates as revealed by some older studies as most frequent agents, not widely used now a days. [3], [11] Total No.…”
