Drug-Polymers Composite Matrix Tablets: Effect of Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose (HPMC) K-Series on Porosity, Compatibility, and Release Behavior of the Tablet Containing a BCS Class I Drug

Abstract: The purpose of this research was to see how the physicochemical properties and porosity of matrix tablets containing various types of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) K series affected the release of propranolol hydrochloride (PNL). PNL is a class I drug (high solubility and permeability) according to the Biopharmaceutics Classification System (BCS), making it an excellent model drug used for studying extended-release drug products. The direct compression method was used to prepare the HPMC-based matrix ta… Show more

“…LEU exhibited a sharp endothermic peak at 307.5 °C related to the melting point, reflecting its highly crystalline structure [ 54 ]. HPMC exhibited a broad endothermic peak at 82.1 °C related to the water loss event, with no melting peak when heating up to 320 °C, reflecting its amorphous nature [ 55 ]. CsA-LEU, composed of LEU and CsA, exhibited a broad endothermic peak from LEU, and the endothermic peaks of CsA were not observed.…”

“…The formulation NT5 comprised of HPMC K100, and PVP K30 was discovered to have a hardness of 4.2 kg/cm 2 . Due to its strong and viscous gel layer, HPMC is frequently used for the preparation of hydrophilic matrix gels [ 22 ]. This layer shields the matrix from rapid disintegration, and it regulates the rate of drug release without altering the release profile.…”

“…Poloxamer 407 has thermo-sensitivity, usually used in dental surgery [46]. HPMC is usually used as a drug tablet or soft gel capsule as a controlled release matrix [47,48]. All materials were prepared by mixing immediately prior to use while maintaining sterility.…”
