“…A chemosensory stimulus, carbon dioxide, has been shown to elicit a persistent state of blood feeding in female mosquitoes (Sorrells et al, 2022). Persistent responses to brief sugar exposure have been also been described, in which flies show local search behavior in an attempt to locate the previous sugar stimulus (Corfas et al, 2019; Behbahani et al, 2021). These studies show that flies can store a memory of the sugar stimulus over short timescales, but they differ from our study in that they describe persistent behavioral changes, whereas we characterize the ability of sugar to modulate future stimulus responses without eliciting overt behavioral changes in the absence of a stimulus.…”

“…The heading direction can also be influenced by the polarization of light ( Weir and Dickinson, 2012 ; Hardcastle et al, 2021 ) or the angle of the sun ( Giraldo et al, 2018 ). Furthermore, flies perform local search behavior after encountering a food site ( Kim and Dickinson, 2017 ; Behbahani et al, 2021 ). This behavior appears to involve path integration through the computation of the internal sense of the position and the orientation of the animal ( Kim and Dickinson, 2017 ).…”

“…A model of pheromone-mediated behavior was inspired by, and some of the parameters were reproduced from Behbahani et al, 2021. The model consists of a circular linear channel with reward zones and a fly agent that can perform discrete steps (time step 0.5s) in the channel in two directions and release a pheromone drop at any step. The agent is initiated in global search mode, where it continuously walks forward in one direction.…”

“…Previous studies which used fly accumulation as evidence for path integration generally have not controlled for the potential effect of fly-emitted pheromones (Corfas et al, 2019;Kim and Dickinson, 2017;Stern et al, 2019), and therefore we argue that they cannot be used as strong evidence that flies indeed are capable of idiothetic path integration. One line of evidence used to argue flies perform path integration comes from recent experiments in which flies were given an optogenetic reward, again by activation of sugarsensing neurons, in a specific location along a circular channel (Behbahani et al, 2021). In that work, repeated visits to the rewarded location, especially after multiple cycles of walking around the circular channel, were interpreted as evidence of path integration.…”
