Driving is a dynamic human experience. The act of operating a vehicle, our movement across space and time, and the landscapes we pass afford rich sensory experiences. However, an increasingly controlled environment in the car and on roads is diminishing many sensuous encounters of orientation, sound, smell, touch, and even sight. The growing emphasis on transport infrastructure that prioritises speed, safety, comfort and convenience -dual carriageways, bypasses, ring roads, tunnels and sound barriers -is serving to disconnect us from our journeys as emplaced experiences. These changes are leading to starkly homogeneous journeys devoid of character that result in a loss of experience and place. In this paper we examine the sensory engagement and experiences of car journeys across landscapes, considering both urban and rural environments. Using case studies from different regions of Australia, we examine the bodily experiences of modern motoring. We suggest that there is no longer an immediate engagement with the landscape being traversed. With particular consideration of understanding places in an embodied way, we consider how modernised highways are disconnecting us from developing and maintaining meaning in our understanding of roads as a significant form of heritage, and as an important mechanism through which people experience heritage.

ResumenSe discute y formula una propuesta de representación fotográfica bajo la denominación de imagenmovimiento, para registrar la experiencia visual del recorrido a través de las autopistas urbanas. Esta consiste en realizar tomas fotográficas con exposiciones de larga duración mientras se recorre la vía. Con ello se obtiene una panorámica temporal que incluye los signos ambientales y los espacios propios de los recorridos involucrados. Esta propuesta responde a las limitaciones de la representación de la experiencia visual de las vías rápidas, si se les entiende como estructuras de origen instrumental, donde la experiencia resultante proviene del movimiento a alta velocidad por el territorio, y que en casi todos los casos excluyen en su planteamiento toda formulación estética o de integración territorial. En este sentido, aunque dichas estructuras pueden ser una oportunidad para percibir, construir y colonizar el paisaje urbano, la ausencia de una representación adecuada de su fenómeno ocasiona una dificultad de comprensión y transformación. En este sentido, lo propuesto apuesta como una opción de representación desde la fotografía, asumiendo que en ella existen tradiciones propias en el uso de las exposiciones prolongadas, en la representación de lo móvil, y de la atención visual múltiple, dividida o debilitada. Arte, Individuo y Sociedad, 27(1) 133-149 AbstractA new kind of photographic representation, called movement-image is proposed and discussed to record the visual experience of the journey through urban highways. It consists of performing long exposure photographic shots while the track is traversed, thus registering a time-panorama which includes landscape signs and inner spaces of the ways involved. This proposal is linked to the limitations of representing these expressways, if they are understood as structures of instrumental origin, where the resulting experience comes from moving at high speed through the territory. In al almost all cases the aesthetic approach or urban integration with the city and landscape are excluded. In this sense, although such structures may be an opportunity to collect, build and colonize the urban landscape, the lack of adequate representation of the phenomenon causes a difficulty in its understanding and transformation. The options for representation using photography is assumed, knowing its own particular tradition in the use of long exposures, for the expression of the mobile, and the multiple visual attention, divided or weakened.

Drawing upon ethnographic data collected among residents of Gabriola Island, British Columbia, this article analyzes the meanings associated with the movement of the MV Quinsam-the primary means of transportation onto and off the island-and with the ritual of ferry commuting. By focusing on the logic of the ferry as a medium of communication and on the ritualistic aspects of commuting and by combining a symbolic interactionist perspective with the media theory of Harold Innis, the authors reflect on how the Gabriola Island ferry shapes islanders' sense of time and thus experiences of lived culture.Résumé: En se servant de données ethnographiques récoltées auprès des rési-dents de l'Île de Gabriola en Colombie-Britannique, cet article analyse les significations rattachées au mouvement du MV Quinsam-le principal moyen de transport pour rejoindre ou quitter l'île-ainsi que celles rattachées au rituel qui consiste à faire la navette par traversier. En se concentrant sur la logique du traversier en tant que mode de communication et sur les aspects rituels associés à l'acte de faire la navette, et en combinant l'interactionnisme symbolique à la théorie médiatique de Harold Innis, les auteurs réfléchissent au rôle que joue le traversier pour les habitants de l'Île de Gabriola en ce qui a trait à leur conception du temps et à leurs expériences de la culture vécue.The logic of communication media is exercised through the operation of their formats: "rules and procedures" that work by selecting and organizing experiences (Altheide, 1985, p. 9) and by shaping ongoing definitions of social situations. Media logic is particularly consequential in the process of constructing temporal realities (Altheide, 1985). From the perspective of symbolic interactionism, however, media do not determine time and its multiple experiences. Individuals and groups instead actively interact with media and time, constructing joint lines of activity and manipulating the shape of temporal structures and experiences and thus affirming relationships and connections-albeit in conditions not always of their own exclusive choosing (Couch, 1984;Flaherty 1999;Mead, 1932).
