Drivers ’reaction time research in the conditions in the real traffic

Abstract: AbstractThe article presents the results of research on the total reaction time of drivers in real traffic conditions. The tested driver had to react to a complex signal by performing a braking manoeuvre. The measurements were based on the author’s method combining the measurements of reaction time during the actual driving with their computer analysis. The research group consisted of 15 drivers with different seniority of driving licences. The study measured the time of percep… Show more

“…The duration of the reaction time can be considered to be between approximately 0.75 and 1.50 s; in particular cases, it can be even greater [ 40 , 41 ]. In fact, from a general point of view, the duration of time can be considered variable in relation to the following typical conditions: perception and reaction of Fast Reaction (FR) , s; perception and reaction of Normal Reaction (NR) , s; and perception and reaction of Slow Reaction (SR) , s. …”

“…This situation is similar to that experienced by humans. Some studies [34] show that human reaction times, measured as the sum of perception time and the time of leg transfer from the accelerator pedal to the brake pedal, range between 0.5 and 1.2 seconds. For the autonomous car, this means that the reactive control is making decisions about distances that have been taken in the past (sensing time delay "st") and the actions will start taking effect in the future (action time delay "at").…”

“…In emergencies, driver needs to make the right decision in a fraction of a second, which is related to the reaction time. Such research was conducted, among others, by [15,19].…”
