Drinking water consumption patterns among adults—SMS as a novel tool for collection of repeated self-reported water consumption

Abstract: Studies have shown that the average drinking water consumption ranges between 0.075 and 3 L/day for adults with both national and regional differences. For exposure assessment of drinking water hazards, country-specific drinking water consumption data including sources of the consumed water may therefore be warranted. To estimate the amount and source of drinking water consumed among adults in Sweden, we collected self-reported estimates using both traditional methods (telephone interviews, web questionnaire) … Show more

“…The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry indicates that, in the United States, on average approximately 2 mg/day of Sr are ingested through water (ATSDR, ; Vautour et al, ). Considering the Sr concentration of the waters from this study (see next sections) and an average consumption of 2 L/day (World Health Organization standard quantity; Säve‐Söderbergh, Toljander, Mattisson, Åkesson, & Simonsson, ), we can estimate a Sr water intake ranging from 0.04 to 0.5 mg/day.…”

“…Another assumption in QMRA models is the consumption pattern of individuals (Hynds et al 2012;Roche et al 2012;Säve-Söderbergh et al 2017b;Van Abel et al 2014). Some models assume the person consumes water once per day (Teunis et al 2010b;Yang et al 2011).…”

“…Water that is ingested directly and water that is added to foods and beverages during preparation are the main sources of water intake for exposure assessment [2]. Estimates about water consumption patterns have been reported in the United States (US) [3][4][5], Canada [6,7], Sweden [8], and Korea [9].…”
