Drinking Alcohol before Age 13 and Negative Outcomes in Late Adolescence

Abstract: Although no temporal relationships can be determined between drinking alcohol before age 13 and delinquent behavior outcomes, the results suggested that adolescents under the age of 13 need to be included in national epidemiological surveys on alcohol use and more efforts need to be directed toward the implementation of prevention programs early in elementary and middle schools.

“…Adolescence is a key period for experimentation (Griffin & Botvin, 2010) and is the developmental period of highest risk for the onset of problematic alcohol and other drug use (Thatcher & Clark, 2008;Steinberg, 2008;Oman et al, 2004). While for many, adolescent substance use represents a transitory period of experimentation, for others, it is associated with involvement in crime and delinquency (Peleg-Oren et al, 2009;Felson, Teasdale & Burchfield, 2008;Ellickson, Tucker & Klein, 2003); early sexual debut and unprotected sex (Fergusson & Lynskey, 1996;Cavazos-Rehg et al, 2010); school exclusion and academic under achievement (Balsa, Giuliano, & French, 2011;Peleg-Oren et al, 2009;Barry, Chaney & Chaney, 2011); and mental health problems including depression, anxiety and psychosis (Deas, 2006). Evidence strongly implicates the family, peers and social contexts in adolescent substance use (Velleman et al 2005).…”

“…Few studies have focused on the effects of very early alcohol use on negative outcomes in late adolescence. One study revealed that very early onset of drinking was related to more delinquency and behavior problems in late adolescence (Peleg-Oren et al, 2009). Yet the link between adolescent delinquency and young adult alcohol problems has been well established (Guo et al, 2001;Harford and Muthén, 2000).…”
