For more than two decades, educational policies in Portugal have primarily focused on improving student outcomes, reducing school absenteeism, and preventing school abandonment. Another factor has been the overemphasis on literacy and numeracy, which has resulted in an unbalanced weighting of these school subjects on instructional time. As a result, instruction time for non-essential classes, such as music and visual arts, was reduced. What effect do these policies have on the drawing abilities and visual literacy of those who pursue visual arts studies in higher education? To date, there has been a plethora of studies on drawing in its didactic, neurological, and physiological components, with findings that strengthen and support the idea that drawing plays a central role in the development of conceptual thinking and abductive reasoning. These findings are significant when advocating for drawing as a learning tool in S.T.E.M., but also, for drawing to play a different role in education overall. To determine whether these policies impact the competencies, skills, and visual literacy of those who pursue visual arts studies, we surveyed higher education teachers regarding their perceptions of student drawing skills as they begin college degrees ranging from fine arts to design. Some survey findings point to weak areas, particularly in perspective drawing and preparatory drawings and sketches. The teachers suggested that the causes were mostly political. These findings should be investigated further, specifically through follow-up interviews and a survey of first-and second-year students enrolled in the courses taught at the educational institutions under analysis.

The aspect of expression is very important in design ideas, amidst the pressure of programming and procedural thoughts nowadays. The expression is a performance that was born from the deepening of a strong identity that makes us further involvement. Freehand drawing is believed to be an important activity that cannot be separated from an architectural design process. Freehand drawing is proven to be an effort that will increase awareness to produce creative thoughts that remain logical. The natural and organic character of a freehand drawing with its flexibility will be able to express the unique value of each design idea. It is very different when compared to the stereotypical technical line of mechanics. This paper aims to discuss the role of freehand drawing in improving the quality of expression during the design process. The discussion was carried out through a qualitative descriptive analysis based on the experience of carrying out freehand drawing courses and several freehand drawing learning and practices. The topic of the role of freehand drawing in the digital age is very strategic because it reminds us of the importance of the role of balance cognition for the design process in general. Çizim bilgiyi anlama, ifade etme, deneyimleme ve depolamanın birlikte ortaya konduğu bilişsel bir aktivitedir. Bu makale, çizimin bireyin deneyimlediği veya inşa ettiği ortam ile ilgili bilgileri işlerken, bu bilginin harici ve somutlaştırılmış bir belleği ortaya koyduğunu savunmaktadır. Çizim yolu ile oluşturulan bellek; bilgiyi tutma, yeniden etkinleştirme, yeniden yapılandırma gibi zihinsel belleğin işlem yetilerine sahip, materyale aktarılmış bir bellek olarak tanımlanmaktadır. Çizimin ortaya koyduğu bilişsel süreç çizim eylemi ve çizilen materyali kapsamaktadır. Araştırmada etkileşimli bu süreç bilişin zihin ile sınırlı kalmadığını, çevre ile kurduğu ilişkide oluştuğunu savunan "dağıtılmış biliş" yaklaşımı üzerinden ele alınmaktadır. Bu yaklaşım ile çizilen temsiller ve zihinsel temsiller arasındaki ilişkiye odaklanılmakta, çizimde tanıma ve anlama süreçleri araştırılmaktadır. Araştırma, çizim yolu ile bellek oluşumunu sunulan teorik yaklaşım doğrultusunda deneyimlemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Bu bağlamda yapılan olgu çalışması aracılığı ile çizim sürecinde aktif olarak ortaya konan belleğin nasıl oluştuğunu sorgulamaktadır. Olgu çalışmasında, tanımlanan bir dizi çizim aktivitesi sonucu çizimlerde oluşan bellek izleri gözlemlenmiş, mekânsal deneyimin materyal üzerinde nasıl temsil edildiği analiz edilmiştir. Çalışmanın sonucunda mekân algısının nasıl oluştuğu ve bunun materyale nasıl aktarıldığı sunulan teorik yaklaşım doğrultusunda değerlendirilmiştir.
