Draft genome of the famous ornamental plant Paeonia suffruticosa

Abstract: Tree peony (Paeonia Sect. Moutan) is a famous ornamental plant, with huge historical, cultural, and economic significance worldwide. In this study, we reported the ~13.79 Gb draft genome of a wide‐grown Paeonia suffruticosa cultivar “Luo shen xiao chun,” representing the largest sequenced genome in dicots to date. Phylogenetic analyses based on genome sequences demonstrated that P. suffruticosa was placed as sister to Vitales, and they together formed a clade that was sister to Rosids, weakly supporting a rela… Show more

“…As the karyotype of Capsella rubella was suggested to be similar to the ACK of the family Brassicaceae, 63 we compared karyotypes of C. lasiocarpa and Capsella rubella using previously reported methods ( Supplementary Figs S7 and S8 ). 17 , 67 We compared the genomic blocks of C. lasiocarpa with inferred ancestral karyotypes, including the ACK ( n = 8), proto-calepineae karyotype (PCK; n = 7) and translocated PCK (tPCK; n = 7). The karyotype of C. lasiocarpa was inferred to evolve from the ACK.…”

“…To analyze the molecular mechanism of tree peony flowering regulation, many research projects have been carried out, especially after the publication of the draft genome of Paeonia suffruticosa . 15 A normalized cDNA library from flower buds of tree peony during chilling fulfillment was sequenced on a Roche 454 GS FLX platform. De novo assembly yielded 23,652 contigs and singletons, providing a significant resource for gene discovery related to endodormancy.…”

“…Many breeding techniques have been applied to model plants and crops, such as magnetic nanoparticle-mediated transgenic technology [218][219][220] or carbon nanotubemediated DNA delivery technology 221 , which can be applied to peony breeding without the need to establish a stable genetic transformation system. The draft genome of P. × suffruticosa 'Luo shen xiao chun' has been published 222 . The first genomic data of Paeonia will play a positive role in promoting the modern molecular breeding of members of this genus.…”
