Downregulation effects of beta-elemene on the levels of plasma endotoxin, serum TNF-alpha, and hepatic CD14 expression in rats with liver fibrosis

Abstract: It has been demonstrated that β-elemene could protect against carbon tetrachloride (CCl(4))-induced liver fibrosis in our laboratory work, and the aim of this paper is to reveal the protective mechanisms of β-elemene. The hepatic fibrosis experimental model was induced by the hypodermical injection of CCl(4) in Wistar male rats. β-elemene was intraperitoneally administered into rats for 8 weeks (0.1 mL/100 g bodyweight per day), and plasma endotoxin content was assayed by biochemistry. The serum TNF-α level wa… Show more

“…β‐elemene was also found to exhibit anti‐inflammatory activities in various systems, as indicated by its ability to downregulate IL‐17 and IFN‐γ in experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis and by acting as an anti‐ulcer agent in gastric ulcer models of rodents . β‐elemene was also found to downregulate serum TNF‐α levels and hepatic CD14 expression in rats with liver fibrosis . Thus these studies clearly demonstrate that β‐elemene exhibits both anti‐inflammatory and anticancer activities.…”

“…Furthermore, β-elemene can downregulate the levels of plasma endotoxins, serum TNF-α, and CD14 expression in hepatic fibrosis rats. β-elemene may play an important role in liver tumorigenesis [27]. …”

“…Currently, the traditional Chinese medicine β-elemene is widely used in the complementary treatment of different types of malignancies [20,21,22,23,24,25,26,27]. β-Elemene has also been found to inhibit the expression of angiotensin II and RhoA/ROCK signaling in hepatic stellate cells and to delay the progression of hepatic fibrosis [28,29,30,31,32]. It may also be effective in antiosteogenic differentiation of ankylosing spondylitis fibroblasts by inhibiting the BMP/SMAD signal pathway and subsequently blocking the expression of ossification marker genes RUNX2 that initiate osteogenic differentiation [33].…”

“…It has also been shown to reverse multidrug resistance [20,21,22,23,24,25,26,27]. In addition, research has shown that β-elemene can inhibit proliferation of human bone fibroblasts and lens epithelial cells and that it can inhibit liver fibrosis [28,29,30,31,32,33,34]. …”
