Double Meniscal Ossicle, the First Description: CT and MRI Findings—Different Etiologies

Abstract: We present a case of 2 ossicles in the medial meniscus with emphasis on MRI and CT findings. Meniscal ossicle is a rare entity and is quite uncommon on the medial side. By showing the typical signal characteristics and intrameniscal location, MRI can be helpful in distinguishing this from other more clinically significant abnormalities. It should be kept as differential from synovial chondromatosis or sesamoid bones like fabella as management is different for all of these entities.

“…Then checking titles and abstracts, 55 full texts were screened and 36 of these were included for data extraction. Furthermore, two articles were retrieved from reference lists, thus a total of 38 articles [1, 3–8, 10, 11, 14, 16, 19, 21–28, 30, 31, 34–36, 38, 41–45, 47, 49, 50, 54–57] were used for our systematic analysis. All were case series or reports; no interventional or observational studies were identified.…”

“…Meniscal ossicle is usually recognized in the MRI as a single osseous structure [3,31]. Nevertheless, cases with two [6,7,21,22,28] or multiple ossicles [6,30] within the same meniscus have been reported as well.…”
