As the third generation of new thin-film solar cells, perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have attracted much attention for their excellent photovoltaic performance. Today, PSCs have reported the highest photovoltaic conversion efficiency (PCE) of 25.5%, which is an encouraging value, very close to the highest PCE of the most widely used silicon-based solar cells. However, scholars have found that PSCs have problems of being easily decomposed under ultraviolet (UV) light, poor stability, energy level mismatch and severe hysteresis, which greatly limit their industrialization. As unique materials, quantum dots (QDs) have many excellent properties and have been widely used in PSCs to address the issues mentioned above. In this article, we describe the application of various QDs as additives in different layers of PSCs, as luminescent down-shifting materials, and directly as electron transport layers (ETL), light-absorbing layers and hole transport layers (HTL). The addition of QDs optimizes the energy level arrangement within the device, expands the range of light utilization, passivates defects on the surface of the perovskite film and promotes electron and hole transport, resulting in significant improvements in both PCE and stability. We summarize in detail the role of QDs in PSCs, analyze the perspective and associated issues of QDs in PSCs, and finally offer our insights into the future direction of development.

The electron transport layer (ETL) is one of the determinants for the performance improvement of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Here, a multifunctional molecule named 4‐fluoro‐phenylalanine (4‐F‐Phe) to modify the surface of tin oxide (SnO2) ETL is introduced as a novel interfacial layer for high‐efficiency PSCs. The modified SnO2 ETLs exhibit an elevated Fermi level, increasing the carrier extraction and suppressing the interfacial recombination. In addition, the various functional groups of the 4‐F‐Phe realize strong interfacial interactions with both the bottom SnO2 ETLs and the top perovskite, which reduces trap state density significantly to promote the interfacial charge transport. As a result, power conversion efficiency (PCE) for the 4‐F‐Phe optimized device reaches 21.91%. Most importantly, the 4‐F‐Phe optimized device without encapsulation maintains 91% of its initial PCE after 2000 h at 25 °C with a humidity of 50 ± 5%, and 90% of the initial PCE after 1000 h at 80 °C in N2. In addition, the encapsulated devices maintain 94% of their initial efficiency under continuous 1 sun illumination for 1000 h when tracking the maximum power point at 45 °C. This work provides a new strategy of modifying ETL to simultaneously improve the efficiency and stability of PSCs.

Colloidal lead sulfide (PbS) quantum dots (QDs), which possess quantum confinement effect and processing compatibility with perovskite, are regarded as an excellent material for optimizing perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, the existing PSCs optimized by PbS QDs are still facing the challenges of poor performance of the charge transport layers, low utilization in the nearinfrared (NIR) region, and unsuitable energy level alignment, which limit the improvement of power conversion efficiency (PCE). Herein, a synchronous optimization strategy is realized via simultaneously introducing PbS QDs into SnO 2 electron transport layer and employing rare-earth-doped PbS QDs (Eu:PbS QDs) film with hydrophobic chain ligands as the NIR light-absorping layer and hole transport layer (HTL) of devices. PbS QDs effectively decrease the density of trap states by passivating defects. Eu:PbS QDs film with adjustable bandgap is employed as an absorption layer to broaden the NIR spectral absorption. The well-matched energy level between Eu:PbS QDs layer and perovskite layer implies efficient hole transfer at the interface. The successful synchronous optimization greatly elevates all photovoltaic parameters, reaching a maximum PCE of 23.27%. This PCE is the highest for PSCs utilizing PbS QDs material in recent years. The optimized PSCs retain long-term moisture and light stability.
