Double Filtration Plasmapheresis

Abstract: Guest Editor's Introduction: This paper was presented at the 26th ASAIO Congress held in April 1980. It was printed in Trans. Am. Soc. Artif. Intern Organs, Volume 26, page 406–411, 1980, and reprinted here with permission. This is the first clinical paper dealing with double filtration plasmapheresis. The plasma separator was made using Kuraray's polyvinyl alcohol hollow fiber, and Kuraray's plasma fractionator was made of ethylene vinyl alcohol hollow fibers. Seven patients afflicted with various diseases we… Show more

“…We summarize the characteristics of these 8 methods, including their advantages, disadvantages, and their LDL reduction rates in table 2 [5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12] . All of the methods involve non-selective removal of LDL by plasma exchange [5] , semi-selective removal of LDL via pore size using DFPP [6] , and other selective removal of LDL, such as immuno-adsorption [7] , biochemical precipitate [8] , and electrostatic interaction [10][11][12] . In clinical practice, plasma exchange is rarely used due to its lack of selectivity and thermofiltration.…”
