Dosimetric properties of a beam quality‐matched 6 MV unflattened photon beam

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to report the characteristics of an equivalent quality unflattened (eqUF) photon beam in clinical implementation and to provide a generalized method to describe unflattened (UF) photon beam profiles. An unflattened photon beam with a beam quality equivalent to the corresponding flat 6 MV photon beam (WF) was obtained by removing the flattening filter from a Siemens ONCOR Avant‐Garde linear accelerator and adjusting the photon energy. A method independent from the WF beam profile w… Show more

“…Furthermore, radiochromic films (Gafchromic EBT3, Ashland) were exposed to selected fields, scanned (Epson 1680 pro), and evaluated using ImageJ. 13 Penumbra width (80%-20%, with 100% defined as max dose for fields <50 × 50 mm 2 , and 100% defined as two times the dose at the penumbra inflection point for field sizes >50 × 50 mm 2 , to account for inhomogeneity in the plateau region caused by the absence of a flattening filter 14 ) was derived from water tank commissioning data (SAD 800 mm, depth 15 mm) and assessed as a function of field size (7.6×7.5 to 97.6×97.5 mm 2 ). In addition, the dependence of penumbra width on off-axis position was determined from exposed EBT3 films (delivering elongated fields of 22.6×97.5 mm 2 for X and 110 × 22.5 mm 2 for Y , SAD 800 mm, depth 50 mm).…”

“…The quite unchanged beam quality of 6MV and 6MV FFF shows that not only the linacs are matched but also the FFF mode is matched to the flattened mode [29]. This is not self-evident; the beam hardening of the flattening filter must be compensated by the energy selection [30] that has been performed by the manufacturer.…”

“…[14] In addition, the lateral dose profile is peaked on the central axis, and less integral target current is required to generate the same dose to the tumor. [1516] As a result, the shielding parameters, such as the tenth-value layers (TVLs) and scatter fractions, calculated for flattened beams, may not be appropriate for shielding evaluations for unflattened beams. [171819] Since FFF beam is used for advanced modalities requiring higher monitor units (MUs) to be delivered, it must be determined whether shielding needs to be enhanced or reduced to use an FFF machine in comparison to vault of FF machine.…”
