Dosimetric Evaluation of Critical Organs at Risk in Mastectomized Left-Sided Breast Cancer Radiotherapy Using Breath-Hold Technique

Abstract: Our study revealed that the use of ABC-mDIBH in the practice of locally advanced mastectomized left-sided breast cancer radiotherapy improves normal tissue sparing with the expected potential of decreasing treatment-related morbidity and mortality. Moreover, the resultant reduction achieved with ABC in doses to the left anterior descending coronary artery, which plays a central role in cardiac perfusion, may have implications for decreasing the potential of radiation-induced cardiac morbidity and mortality.

“…For each organ, the specific dose to each volume, D 10% to D 100% inclusive, was investigated to determine dose impact of DIBH versus FB. For comparative purposes, maximum dose (D max ), mean dose (D mean ), V 30Gy and V 20Gy were also assessed (12)(13)(14)(15)(16)(17). Paired student sample t-tests were used, examining dose differences between FB and DIBH plans for organs-at-risk.…”

“…Recent years have witnessed signifi cant advances in radiation oncology with widespread adoption of contemporary RT strategies including Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT), Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), and Adaptive Radiation Therapy [59][60][61][62][63][64][65]. Radiosurgery in the form of Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS), Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT) and Hypofractionated Stereotactic Radiation Therapy (HFSRT) may be used for focused irradiation of several CNS disorders as well as several other tumors throughout the human body .…”
