Dosilia (Porifera, Demospongiae) redefined

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Dosilia plumosa (Carter, 1849), type species of the genus, and D. brouni (Kirkpatrick, 1906), with distribution respectively in the Oriental and Ethiopic regions, are revised based on a SEM analysis of spicules, gemmules and skeletal structure.

“…Genus Dosilia Gray, 1867 (type species: Spongilla plumosa Carter, 1849), according to a recent revision by Cândido et al (2010), includes five species and D. plumosa is the only member known from Indian freshwaters (Annandale 1911;Penney & Racek 1968 Habitus: The sponge was found attached to submerged plants as well as rocks in shallow regions of the pond (maximum depth about 30cm). Live sponge is often bright green in colour and exhibits typically lobed and irregular body shape; oscula are small.…”

“…Dosilia plumosa was previously well illustrated using SEM (see Pronzato 2002 andCândido et al 2010), however since those works were based on the preserved museum material, our recent field data and ecological observations of the Indian populations improve the understanding of the species. Our material of this species from western Maharashtra shows similar morphological characters under SEM as described by the previous authors.…”

“…Manconi & Pronzato (2002) provided an update of generic diagnosis with description of its type species. Cândido et al (2010) provide the latest review of this genus, with redescriptions of all five species. Indian records of D. plumosa include Mumbai (Maharashtra), Pulta (W Bengal), Hazaribagh (Bihar), Jodhpur, Jaipur and Udaipur (all from Rajasthan), Rambha (Orissa) (Annandale 1911;Soota 1991).…”
