“…The RBE values obtained range between ~1.0 and ~1.2 for doses up to ~5 Gy. Significantly higher RBE values were reported in studies using low energy protons (Schmid et al 1997, Mognato et al 2003 while others reported RBE values below 1.0 for lower LET values (Todorov et al 1972). For inter-chromosome exchanges in human fibroblasts the RBE was reported as <1.0 as well (0.4 keV μm −1 protons relative to 137 Cs) (Wu et al 1997).…”

“…Data on chromosome aberrations include chromosome aberrations in root tips (Larsson and Kihlman 1960) and chromosome aberrations in human peripheral blood lymphocytes (Todorov et al 1972, Takatsuji et al 1983, Edwards et al 1985, Matsubara et al 1990, Rimpl et al 1990, Schmid et al 1997, Wu et al 1997, Mognato et al 2003, Govorun et al 2006. Higher aberration frequencies were reported for protons.…”

“…Comparison with the microdosimetric data on the same beams are reported in [5]. The data were compared with those reported in literature for human lymphocytes of peripheral blood irradiated with 50 and 7.5 MeV protons [7,24]. Good agreement was found with the data at 50 MeV for chromosome breaks as far as frequency values and their dependence on the dose: indeed the dose-response curve is described by a linear function with a K value of about 0.15 (Gy) -1.…”

“…To this end, a series of experiments have been conducted at the cyclotron at Milan University using proton beams in the L.E.T. interval between 1 and 10 KeV/gm of tissue where the data at present available are very limited [7,8,15,24,25]. Data on the survival effect [3], the micronuclei and polynuclei formations [4] in cultured human cells and microdosimetric analysis [6] have been already reported.…”
