Introduction: Patients in Geriatric Palliative Care (GPC) complain of pain and opioids are the drugs used to manage it. This study aims to understand the sociodemographic, clinical and opioid use characteristics of GPC patients in a public hospital in the Federal District of Brazil.Methods: This is a cross-sectional approach based on analysis of prescriptions. The results are shown in tables after descriptive and bivariate analysis. Fisher’s exact test, Bonferroni’s post hoc for categorical variables and Kendall’s tau correlation coefficient for continuous variables were used.Results: Four hundred and forty-four prescriptions for 49 patients were analyzed. Data showed a mean age of 80.4 years, a prevalence of women (57.1 %), the main diagnoses being Alzheimer’s disease and neoplasia, and prevalent length of up to 7 days. Morphine was the most used medication (15.8 mg to 20.8 mg). The oral route was predominant at the beginning of hospitalization and the subcutaneous route at the end. There was a greater dose variation in degenerative disease of the nervous system and statistical significance between length of stay (1 to 7 days) and clinical diagnosis.Discussion: The sociodemographic and clinical characteristics are in line with the Brazilian epidemiological profile. The use of opioids was equivalent to that recommended and is more associated with dyspnea control. Dose variation in degenerative nervous system disease probably occurred due to the variability of diseases included in this group. The statistical significance between length of hospitalization and diagnosis can be justified by the clinical severity of the patients hospitalized.

Objetivo: Comprender las experiencias de mujeres transgénero con VIH que viven con síntomas asociados al tratamiento antirretroviral en Bucaramanga. Material y Método: se realizó un estudio fenomenológico basado en el método de Colaizzi durante los meses de febrero a marzo de 2022; los participantes fueron invitados a contribuir en el estudio por intermedio de una madre transgénero, contactada a través de una red comunitaria; se utilizó un muestreo de “bola de nieve”; el primer contacto se realizó de manera telefónica con cada una de las posibles participantes, verificando los criterios de inclusión; se realizaron entrevistas a profundidad y la saturación teórica se dio al realizar la séptima entrevista, pero se decidió completar 10 entrevistas para ampliar el análisis. Resultados: Se identificaron 5 unidades temáticas: cerrando los ojos a la verdad, experimentado expresiones negativas, entre el ir y venir de los síntomas, generando estrategias para el control de síntomas y renaciendo a una nueva vida. Conclusiones: En las mujeres transgénero, la experiencia de síntomas asociados al tratamiento antirretroviral, es un proceso difícil, pero se posibilita por el apoyo en el control de síntomas y el apoyo familiar y social.

Introduction: Pain in people with cancer is prevalent and should have an individualized therapeutic plan. Objectives: To evaluate pain control in advanced cancer patients in a hospital palliative care unit. Methods: This is a cohort study, with prospective design, and quantitative approach, including advanced cancer patients admitted to a palliative care unit between June 2021 and February 2022 reporting pain. Data was collected from medical records and the Brief Pain Inventory (BPI) was used to assess pain on the first (D1), third (D3) and seventh (D7) day of hospitalization. Results: One hundred and four patients participated in the study. The most prevalent tumors were of the gastrointestinal tract (n=23; 22%), cervix (n=21; 20%) and breast (n=17; 16%). Abdomen was the most reported site of pain (n=34; 33%), with 50% classified as nociceptive pain, 39% neuropathic pain, and 11% mixed. On D1, 43% reported severe pain, 31% moderate, and 12% mild pain. There was an evolutionary drop in the percentage of severe pain (BPI3 70% to 37.1%; BPI4 12.6% to 5.4%; BPI5 42.5% to 13.5%; and BPI9 67.8% to 21.6%) according to the answers to all BPI questions during the period. On D1, D3 and D7, the average equipotent doses of oral morphine were 116 mg, 133 mg and 154 mg and the frequency of use of adjuvant use was 60%, 75%, and 69%, respectively. Conclusions: Pain was properly controlled and was related to the increased use of adjuvants, both for general and neuropathic pain. It was possible to observe that the use of adjuvants was related to better pain control.
