Doppler study and evidences of perfusion changes in the ophthalmic artery of pregnant smokers

Abstract: The OA in pregnant smokers shows a biphasic pattern of perfusion correlated with the time of consumption of the last cigarette. There are signs of vasoconstriction and hypoperfusion to tobacco exposure between 2 and 24 and hyperperfusion in A Group compared to B Group.

“…This study is in agreement with that of Lau et al, 1 which also demonstrates that it is possible to perform non-invasive assessment of central nervous system arteries in pregnant women and test the action of vasoactive drugs. 4 We have also reported the accuracy and best cutoff value for OAD indices to diagnose pre-eclampsia. 5 The application of OAD in hypertensive disorders in pregnancy brings a perspective of new approaches of care in clinic settings, resulting in early therapeutic interventions and monitoring, especially in the severe form of pre-eclampsia, to reduce maternal and perinatal adverse outcomes.…”

“…A Doppler scan of the OA and the MCA was performed at a single time in the CG during the morning. In the SG, a Doppler scan of the OA and the MCA was performed during the morning, at least 2 h after smoking; this measure was considered baseline (BL) 8 . The length of time since the last cigarette prior to the Doppler exam was recorded.…”
