“…A combination of Doppler indices can be used to estimate intracardiac pressures [23, 112, 113, 114]. The ratio of peak E velocity of transmitral/transtricuspid flow and E m velocity of mitral/tricuspid annular motion can be used to estimate mean pulmonary artery wedge pressure and mean right atrial pressure in patients with various cardiovascular disorders (with both impaired and preserved LV systolic function).…”

“…However, in the presence of impaired LV relaxation, fi lling pressures have a minimal effect on Ea. 35,36,42 Accordingly, the E/Ea ratio ( Figures 13.6 and 13.7) has been successfully used for the estimation of LV fi lling pressures 34,39,44 in the presence of cardiac disease whether EF was normal or depressed, in the presence of sinus tachycardia 45 or atrial fi brillation, 46 in cardiac transplant patients, 47 and in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. 48 Figures 13.8 and 13.9 show examples of the E/Ea ratio being used for the estimation of LV fi lling pressures.…”

“…However, the most accurate prediction is reached when annular Ea velocity is measured (see Figure 13.13) and the E/Ea ratio is used. 45 Worth noting is that in situations in which there is complete merging of mitral E and A velocities, it is still possible to detect a distinct annular Ea and to use the E/Ea ratio. , 45 with permission of the American Heart Association.)…”
