Donation of organs and tissues: academic experience of nursing / Doação de órgãos e tecidos: experiência de acadêmicos de enfermagem / Donación de órganos y tejido: experiencia de estudiantes de enfermería

Abstract

Objective: report the participation of nursing students in the search for potential donors of organs and tissues.Methodology: experience report about nursing students experience during the extension project "League of Active Search of Potential Organs and Tissues Donors" of Procurement Organization Organs and Tissue in the state of Piauí, in the period from March to June 2014.Results: the main activity developed by the students, along with the on-duty nurse, was the active search for potential donors of organs and tissues. Still, the potential donors were at assessing and maintaining, their families were being interviewed and event notifications were reported to the Notification, the Organs Procurement and Distribution Center, and monitoring the process of capturing the organ and/or tissue after family consent. Conclusion: the participation of academics in the various relevant steps to the organ and tissues donation process elucidated the role of the nurse within this service. Moreover, this experience contributed to the formation of new multipliers on the subject.
