Domino Catalysis: Palladium‐Catalyzed Carbonylation of Allylic Alcohols to β,γ‐Unsaturated Esters

Abstract: Palladium-catalyzed carbonylations of organic (pseudo)halides are of broad interest for both academic and industrial research. [1] In the last two decades, the majority of the work in this area focused on the application of new ligand systems and the extension of the range of nucleophiles for the carbonylation of aryl and vinyl halides (or related pseudohalides). Consequently, the development of general catalytic protocols for more challenging substrates remains an important but challenging goal. Based on our… Show more

“…[11] Ay ield of 47 %d iester 4 was obtained even with PdCl 2 (Table 2, entry 5), which is the least expensivep alladium salt applied and serves as precursor in the synthesis of the other displayed palladiumc omplexes.T he appropriate ligand/palladium ratio (L/M) was found to be highly important. Low L/M ratios led to low selectivities that favoured formation of up to 45 % 6.F urthermore, an incomplete conversion of 2 and 5 ( Table 2, entries 8-10) and almostn oy ield for 4 was obtained (entries 8a nd 9).…”

“…[10] The most general methoda llowing the application of different allylic alcohols and different alcohols was recently establishedb yB eller and co-workers. [11] In contrast to the tandeme ther formation/ether carbonylation, the alkoxycarbonylation of olefins into esters has been investigated more extensively.…”

“…[1][2][3] Besides the direct insertion of carbon monoxide into, for instance, alcohols yielding carboxylic acids or into allylic substrates such as alcohols, [4][5][6] ethers [7] and amines [8] yielding the corresponding unsaturated carboxylic acid derivatives, the carbonylation of unsatured substrates including the addition of a brønstedt-acidic nucleophiles is a powerful tool. Principally, high catalyst activities and excellent selectivities can be reached due to the defined catalyst structure, contributing to highly atom economic reactions, as e. g. manifested for palladium catalysed carbonylation reactions.…”
