Purpose Manufacturing and services SMEs in Africa face challenges and constraints exacerbated by ineffectual government policies, environmental turbulence and the near absence of institutional support. The purpose of this paper is to investigate if informal linkages and formal cooperation are helping firms to overcome constraints to uptake of technological innovations in Nigeria. Design/methodology/approach The paper is based on quantitative data obtained from structured interviews of 631 Nigerian firms. These firms were selected using stratified random sampling from a total population of 18,906 manufacturing and services companies in the national database obtained from the National Bureau of Statistics. Findings The result of the binary logistic regression indicates that while informal linkages appear to be insignificant, formal inter-firm cooperation is an effective moderator of barriers to technological innovations. Research limitations/implications The paper focusses only on technological, rather than non-technological, innovations. Practical implications The paper recommends that, in addition to other interventions to promote diffusion of technological innovations, governments should give priority to interventions that support formal cooperation among SMEs. Originality/value Previous studies have generally looked at the impact of cooperative networks on firms’ innovation uptake. This paper provides original insights into the “how” of cooperative impact, specifically with respect to helping SMEs to overcome constraints. The paper also delineates formal cooperation from informal linkages.

The term Knowledge Exchange (KE) is commonly used to describe university-industry collaborations that frequently foster innovation. Understanding such collaborations and their potential value is a difficult activity. The means of supporting collaboration vary significantly and potential for successful innovation is hard to asses. In this paper, we describe work aimed at developing an improved understanding of knowledge exchange within a digital context-both within digital sectors and also in non-digital sectors where the adoption of digital technologies can lead to new and challenging opportunities. Our work focuses upon digital innovation for Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs) aiming to support effective Knowledge Exchange based innovation; a specific driver being the difficulty of understanding the potential for successful and productive collaborations with individual SMEs. From a number of existing digital innovation models and instruments, factors for characterizing digital innovation potential have identified. However, based on our experience and expert feedback, such characterizations appear to be inappropriate for SMEs. In response to this, an instrument has been developed to identify potential for quality digital innovation based on collaborative KE between SMEs and universities. The instrument is introduced, and its development and refinement discussed.

Public research institutions are encouraged to engage in industry sustainable collaboration in China. We develop an analytical framework based on the factor-process-outputs model and use a mechanism model by incorporating four elements (innovation climate, strategic partnership, collaborative mechanism, and the degree of participation) associated with the research institutions and industry collaboration. Using data collected from a face-to-face interview survey of 533 experts located at research institutions in seven Chinese provinces and one municipality who have collaborated with the seed industry, we use a structural equation model to identify important factors that affect innovation behavior. Results show that the innovation climate does not directly affect the participation of research institutions in research industry collaboration; however, it has a direct effect on strategic partnership and the collaborative mechanism. We find that an innovation climate could indirectly influence the participation of research institutions via collaborative mechanism and strategic partnership. Furthermore, strategic partnership and collaborative mechanism are found to moderate the participation behavior of research institutions. Moreover, we find that policy support, knowledge innovation strategies, and resource sharing mechanisms are essential factors for sustainable and effective collaboration.
