Does Web-Scale Discovery Make a Difference?

Abstract: The University of Texas at San Antonio Libraries implemented the Summon1™ Discovery Service in January 2010 to provide a convenient starting point for library research, particularly for undergraduate students who are less experienced in library research. Librarians thought Summon™ would help users find and use materials more effectively; therefore, implementation of the discovery tool was expected to positively influence collections use. At the end of the first year following Summon™ implementation, statistics… Show more

“…E-journal use rose markedly in the Summon studies when measured through both click-through statistics and full-text downloads in COUNTER JR1 reports. 16 Circulation of print materials also increased, though at a more modest rate compared to e-journals. Circulation statistics of the UT San Antonio's print materials increased 1.2 percent, but Kemp noted the increase was smaller than the enrollment growth for the same year and the effects reported may not be indicative of the benefits of the discovery system.…”

“…Kemp found that, following the implementation of Summon, print circulations and link resolver activity increased while database, e-journal lookup, and OPAC searches decreased. 16 Looking at a different discovery service, Calvert alternatively observed a decrease in print circulations after her library implemented EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS). 17 She did, however, notice an increase in abstracts viewed and full text articles retrieved in several of her library's subscription EBSCOhost databases.…”
