Does the Female Life Span Exceed That of the Male

Abstract: A survey of all the papers relating to life span in Drosophila melanogaster published in Experimental Gerontology from its origin in 1964 to 1981 shows that, contrary to a common belief, the mean life span of females exceeds that of males in only approximately 50% of the cases. It is shown that mean life span, as it is measured in most experiments, is a poor estimate of the potential life span of a Drosophila strain. However, the analysis of four extensive studies of Drosophila melanogaster life span strongly … Show more

“…These results confirm the studies of Lints and Bermejo. 27,32) In life span parameter, Fraxetin treatment shows a beneficial effect, both for females and males, with a maximum average longevity for F-0 groups. Under induced stress conditions, the best treatments were in males: F-2 treatment for longevity, F-0 treatment for average longevity and F-4 treatment for life span, whereas in females, the highest average longevity was reached in the F-2 group.…”

“…Results from fitting procedures performed on rotifers [ 10], flies [11], rats [ 12] and horses [4,13] The present model has also been tested by fitting some particular survivorship kinetics, in order to gain information about its extent of applicability. In figure 4 and table 2 two sets of data are reported derived from kinetics of male flies grown, by pairs, (Id1 , 1 $) either in bottles (250 cm3) or in vials (50 cm3) [11 Table 1.…”
